Announcing the MSAANZ17 Conference Programme

The MSAANZ Executive are excited to share the final programme for the MSAANZ17 Conference, to be held in Sydney in September 2017.

It is shaping up to be another great year, with a team of both local and International speakers, including our Key Note speaker Stuart Hata, A veteran museum store retailer for over 28 years, Stuart Hata has been Director of Retail Operations for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco since 2003. In this capacity, Stuart is responsible for a multi-million dollar business at
the de Young and Legion of Honor Museum Stores, leading a staff of 40 plus team members.

We are also excited to have Andrew Andoniadis of Andoniadis Retail Services, Oregon USA join our speaker line up. Since 1992, Andrew Andoniadis has specialized in increasing the profits of museum stores and enhancing the visitor experience. He has been a featured seminar presenter at museum conferences throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe.

This year we are also pleased to announce our Inaugural Retail Recognition Awards.  Award winners will be announced during the MSAANZ17 Conference Dinner on the evening of the 21st of September 2017, with entries open to both Member & Non-Member Cultural Institutions. Judging of the awards will involve a banded system of entry – separating venues turning over less than one million dollars  per year and those over one million dollars. MSAANZ17 Scholarship Award Winner

On Behalf of the MSAANZ Scholarship Committee, we are pleased to announce the winner of the 2017 Scholarship to attend the MSAANZ17 Conference this September in Sydney.
Congratulation to Erika McClintock, Visitor & Commercial Services Manager, City Gallery Wellington, a part of Experience Wellington. Erika worked in the cultural retail sector for many years as a student in the United States, and joined the team at  City Gallery Wellington in 2013. She has contributed to significant growth in the Gallery’s retail operation to date and is looking forward to attending her first MSAANZ conference.
We also want to thank the members of the Scholarship Award Committee  for all their hard work in evaluating the submissions. It is a lot of hard work with a very difficult choice making a decision from all the worthy applicants.

Museum Store Sunday

Last month at the annual MSA (USA) conference in Pittsburgh, the Museum Store Association announced that it is developing a holiday shopping campaign, sandwiched in the middle of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend  – called Museum Store Sunday on November 26, 2017!

Every year in the States and around the world, consumers  are encouraged to participate in shopping campaigns for Black Friday (11/24/17), Shop Small Saturday (11/25/17), Cyber Monday (11/27/17) and Giving Tuesday (11/28/17) and now The MSA is claiming Museum Store Sunday as THE day to shop and support museum stores and their institutions worldwide.  Museum Store Sunday will focus much-needed attention on the unique retail experience provided by museum stores.

This initiative has now picked been up by the Association for Cultural Enterprise in the UK, and the Museum Shops Association of Australia & New Zealand with the intention of helping to make this a global annual event.

Museum Store Sunday participation is available to all non-profit retailers, both members and non-members.  MSAANZ members will receive special marketing information, event, and publicity assistance. If you’re not a member, join today to take advantage of these members-only opportunities.

Announcing the launch of our new website

We’re excited to announce that our new and refreshed website is live. The updated site includes changes to navigation, with fully responsive drop down menus for both mobile and desktop versions, and a new domain name supporting the Trans Tasman nature of our organisation  –  

We’ve also improved the structure of our content, so you’ll get more from a quick read. There’s a whole host of smaller but impactful changes which will enable us to keep you all better informed about our activities and events, and are paving the way to the implementation of a members only page and online event bookings  – phase two of our website refreshment project.

MSAANZ establishes annual conference scholarship.

The Museums Shops Association of Australia & New Zealand is proud to announce the commencement of an annual scholarship, established to assist museum store professionals to attend the annual MSAANZ Conference to learn more about their trade and strengthen their skills, thereby enhancing the industry.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have never attended an MSAANZ Retail Conference.
  •  Must be employed with a cultural retailing environment. (Museum, Gallery, Zoo etc)
  • Must certify financial need.
  • Applicants organisation must be an MSAANZ member in good standing at the time of application.

The winning applicants will be selected by an appointed MSAANZ Scholarship Committee and will receive written notification of their selection.

Recipients must attend the full program on the date and location specified, and will be asked to write a report for our members detailing their experience at conference. In case of a recipient being unable to attend the conference, the award must be returned. The applicant may re-apply at any time to attend a future conference. The award is not transferable.


Applications close on 1 July 2017.

Service IQ NZ Museum Awards

We’re excited to be collaborating with Museums Aotearoa on a new award category in the Service IQ NZ Museum Awards! Presented as part of the MA2017 conference in May, this award will celebrate the best new product, and best new range produced by a museum or gallery, and recognise some really relevant, innovative, sustainable and successful museum and gallery retail products.

2017 Benchmarking Survey

The Museum Shops Association of Australia & New Zealand (MSAANZ) is a non profit organisation dedicated to specialty retailers from cultural institutions. MSAANZ is undertaking an industry wide study as part of our mission to enhance the success of non profit retail and of the professionals engaged in it.

Findings will provide insights and valuable information to help museum store professionals benchmark their performance and make informed business decisions.

If you manage a store located in a cultural institution and are able to participate in this survey, please contact us at for a survey link.

All results will be kept confidential and reported only as combined values with other stores. Following the collation and review of this survey, the Executive Summary and full report will be made available to all contributors who complete the survey.

Museums Shops Association Name Change

Since its formation, the membership breakdown of the Museum Shops Association of Australia (MSAA) has gone through significant change, with more individuals and member institutions from New Zealand joining year on year.

In response to this change, the Executive of the MSAA proposed to change the name of the Museum Shops Association of Australia, to the Museum Shops Association of Australia & New Zealand. Following a vote by our members, we are proud to announce that this name change has been overwhelmingly accepted, and the Museums Shops Association of Australia, will formally become the Museums Shops Association of Australia & New Zealand. (MSAANZ)

We are also pleased to announce the launch of our new members and suppliers online forum. This forum has been established to allow colleagues to discuss issues, source product, and network with each other in an easy to use platform. All members will shortly be provided with an invitation to join this forum, which can be accessed from the Association’s website. #MSAA2016
